stories...

BARCELONA, Spain (AFP) - Finnish manufacturer Nokia, the world's biggest maker of mobile phones, said Monday it would release a touch-screen handset for the first time in the second half of this year.

Nokia has been late in introducing the technology. Apple has scored a hit with its touch-screen iPhone and Nokia's traditional rivals LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and HTC have already used the technology.

Nokia chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told a press conference here that the touch-screen phone would appear "in the second half of 2008."

He added that Nokia, which had 40 percent of the world market at the end of 2007, would launch its music download service "Nokia Music Store" in 10 more countries in the next six months. It is currently available only in Britain.

N82 Black Edition : $629 unlocked

by Thomas Ricker

After having scooped the world with the first press shots of the N82 in silver, Intomobile brings us the first shots of the N82 in black. Nothing else is new. Then again, with a 5 megapixel camera, xenon flash, Carl Zeiss glass and quad-band GSM with HSDPA data, assisted GPS, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, FM Tuner, 3.5-mm jack, microSD slot, and 2.4-inch auto-rotating display... is there anything you're missing? Oh right, HSDPA on US frequencies would be damn nice if Nokia hopes to grow their domestic presence. $629 is the unlocked cost, but hey, shipping is free.

Nokia N81 8GB

Unlike the N9x series cellphones which are designed for multimedia of all sorts, the new Nokia N81 is focused on music. It does not have any fancy Carl Zeiss lens or GPS, but it does sport really loud stereo speakers, 3.5mm headphone jack, 8GB of internal memory for all your tunes, 3G, and WiFi.

It can be a decent gaming phone too, with its support for landscape orientation games and a D-pad suited for gaming.

Lastly, the Nokia N81 is configured to find and buy music and games from the Nokia Music Store and N-Gage games service. Sounds like a great integrated entertainment solution.

Price and Availability

US$499 for 2GB removable microSD memory model, US$599 for 8GB internal memory model. Fourth quarter of 2007.

Official Press Release

Nokia N81 and Nokia N81 8GB: Entertainment made simple

Nokia To Expand Capacity For Its N95 Smartphone

At CES, the company said the handset will come with a hefty price tag of $749, likely attracting only a small group of users.

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) disclosed plans Monday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to make available an 8-Gbyte version of its multimedia N95 smartphone in the United States.

The N95, optimized for the United States, will support HSDPA cellular technology, which is capable of achieving speeds of between 8 and 10 Mbps. That means the phone will be compatible withAT&T (NYSE: T)'s high-speed network, but it won't work with Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless or Sprint (NYSE: S) since they use different cellular technology.

The 8-Gbyte version is expected to become available at Nokia retailers and the company's flagship stores in the first quarter of this year. But the phone will come with a hefty price tag of $749, likely attracting only a small group of users.

The smartphone is an upgrade to the original 120-Mbyte N95 that Nokia unveiled in 2006. Nokia is calling the new device "the memory-packed big brother" to the original phone. With expanded memory, the N95 offers up to 20 hours of video or up to 6,000 songs, according to Nokia.

It also comes with a 5-megapixel camera, built-in Wi-Fi for accessing the Internet using hotspots in public places or enterprise wireless local area networks, and built-in GPS. The GPS feature can be used with the phone's Nokia Maps application, which offers maps for more than 150 countries.

For better functionality, the N95 slides two ways. It slides to one side to reveal a keypad for dialing and typing, and to another side to reveal controls for playing music or video.

The N95 is part of Nokia's Nseries, a range of high-performance multimedia smartphones intended for entertainment, Web browsing, and messaging.

Apple's iPhone takes another step to becoming a business tool

Jonny Evans

Astaro Corporation is offering iPhone support to virtual private networks controlled by its Astaro Security Gateway appliance.

This support allows iPhone users to connect to such networks using their home and business networks. It means iPhone users can access email and internal sites protected by Astaro's security solution.

The company claims setting the system up requires just a few clicks to create VPN access on the Astaro appliance side.

Astaro's product offering is available commercially for business, the company also offers a free home user license which offers protection to ten IP addresses.

"As an Apple iPhone user myself, we have made it extremely easy to access networks protected by Astaro Security Gateway" said Gert Hansen, chief security architect and co-founder of Astaro. "It's a great feeling to
provide everyone with an iPhone the ability to connect to their networks for free. It turns the iPhone into a real business tool, albeit a very stylish one."

Astaro has created a configuration guide providing step-by-step instructions on how to configure Apple's iPhone and Astaro Security Gateway VPN settings.

This document as well as Astaro's free home user license download is available from the company's website.

Latest research puts iPods and iPhones in top five must-have items this season

Jonny Evans

iPods, iPhones, PSPs, and Nintendo's Wii and DS Lite seem set to be the top five electronic gadgets under European Christmas trees this year, new research claims.

comScore this morning released the results of its study (assessed during the first three weeks of November) looking into the frequency of online search inquiries for the most popular gadgets in the UK, France and Germany this Christmas.

The Nintendo Wii (with an average of 4.9 million weekly searches) seems the most in-vogue gadget this season, hotly-pursued by the iPod, which drew 3.5 million searches. The Nintendo DS Lite, the Sony Playstation PSP, and the Apple iPhone (1,706,504 searches) complete the top five.

While iPod achieved 1,706,504 searches of its own, the iPod nano received an average of another 287,000 searches each week.

The most popular mobile phone was the iPhone, with the Nokia N95 and Samsung U600 its closest competitors.

ComScore assessed the figures by tracking searches across a clutch of leading electronics devices.
